In 1931, Lunenburger Fred Fox set a Maritime high school record in the 100-yard dash that remained for 28 years. He was also the highest scorer at the fabled Acadia Relays, was the Maritime junior sprint gold medallist in 1933 and senior champion in 1934, ran on 13 Maritime championship teams and at two Olympic trials, and won nearly 100 lifetime medals and cups.
In addition, Fox helped Mount Allison University win two Maritime hockey championships and after his playing career was named president of the Maritime Amateur Hockey Association. In 1981, he became first Nova Scotian to earn Hockey Canada’s award of merit for his contributions to the game.
As a member of the air force during World War II, Fox was shot down over the Mediterranean, twice captured and twice escaped, but was a POW for three years. Later, he spent 13 years as Lunenburg’s fire chief, once supervising a 12-hour battle to save main street when fire swept through the old legion hall.
