Mellish Lane, of Lunenburg, excelled on the baseball field while pitching both left- and right-handed, and was known for his wicked slider and classic windmill windup.
“Mellish was one of the best, if not the best pitcher, ever produced in Nova Scotia,” according to the province’s sports hall of fame, of which he was an original inductee.
Mellish was a member of a Maritime college team that toured the United States and Canada and won 52 of 69 games against the outstanding American teams, when he would regularly be called upon to pitch doubleheaders, earning the nickname “Ironman.”
In the 1930 Maritime senior championships, he pitched every game as Halifax defeated Moncton.
